2016 - Visual Arts Achievement Program

One of the toughest decisions I have to make every year is what to send to the State Arts Council exhibit.

This is made even tougher this year as I have one of the most talented group of students I've ever taught.

Congratulations to Merritt Huey, Yana Vickery,  Lauren Frusterio, and Rachel Cunningham for having your work selected to go.

To my other students.  Please continue to keep up the awesome work and know that I think it is very frustrating that I cannot send ALL of your work.

Natalie W - Stained Glass

I took this picture at my church at the beginning of the school year. I love how the colors glow. Also, I like how symmetrical the picture is.

Hunter T - Half Hearted

I took this picture in the studio when trying to take portraits. This was the first shot that i took and i accidentally only turned one of the lights on exposing only half of her face. I ended up not using this picture for portraits but i've always had it and kind of liked it.

Taylor S - Garage Door

I took this picture downtown at the beginning of this year. I love this picture because I love how simple it is and how your eyes lead down the garage door. I also love black and white pictures because it really shows the texture of the picture.

Emily L - Leaves

Leaves. I took this photograph at Veterans Park and edited it with photoshop. I find the shadows of the leaves to be quite compelling. I take photographs based on what pleases my senses the most.

Sarah K - Dark

This photograph was made in my home studio.
This image is very compelling based off the clarity, lighting, black and white filter, and the uniqueness of the composition. Using shadows and positioning of the model in portrait allow for artistic value. There are no distractions in the image and the girl pictured is the main focus. Studio portraits are simple to take yet can be edited and posed in several eye appealing ways.

Lauren J - Leaf in Water

I took this photograph at the lake down the road from my house. I find this photo interesting because after I was done perfecting it I really liked how the final product turned out.

Mallory H - Bike Rack

I took this picture around the fall in downtown Birmingham. The repetition of the bike rack looked like it would be a great leading line photo. The way the picture blurs makes it an interesting piece.

Gillian E - Patrick

I've titled this picture Patrick. This is a picture of Cole. I took this picture of him while he was sitting on the ground. I find it interesting because his eyes turned out pretty good.

Sophie W - Raindrops on Fingers

I made this photo on my back porch one afternoon right before the sun went down.
I find this interesting because I love how you can see the water droplet and the details on my fingers.

Rebekah C - Earth

I took this picture at the pumpkin patch. I like the composition of this picture. There's just something about the shoes, cotton, and dirt that makes the picture appealing to me.

Kaleigh C - A Maasai Morning

A Maasai Morning. taken in Tanzania, Africa, in June 2015. It's an absolutely beautiful site, the photograph doesn't capture the full effect of the sunrise in person, but it's still beautiful even in photograph. When It was 10:00 at night here in Alabama, it was 5:00 in the morning there.  Although you can't tell, imagine a sunrise here and multiply it by 100 and that will still not summarize the sunrise in Africa.

Sarah A - Sour Patch Kids

I made this Photo at school outside during the second nine weeks. I find it interesting because I like how the sugar shows up really well and is defined.

Jake D - Fire Rain

I took this photograph in my driveway. I think this photo is interesting because the steel wool looks really cool. The photo took awhile to make because I had to find the right kind of steel wool, but after that taking the photo was easy.

Corbin W - Fallen Heart

I took this photograph on my driveway, in November.

I think it is compelling, not only because it is in the shape of a heart, but because it also has two main colors that take over the heart in a symmetrical pattern.

Yana V - Space

I took this photo when I was touring South Alabama this summer. I find this photo interesting because the way I edited it the ceiling looks like space and stars.

Brittany W - Dancing in the Rain

I took this picture on my drive way and got my friend Summer to make it look like it was raining by holding a hose over it. I took this photo during the second nine weeks in the first semester.

I find the color contrast of black and green interesting in this photo and I love the rain falling in the background.

Anna S - Rachel

I took this photograph in my friend's yard and made her pose.
I find this photo interesting because the picture being in B&W adds emphasis to the photo.
